Portway Penguins provide swim teaching and coaching at based at Henbury Leisure Centre in North Bristol. Formally known as Portway Swimming Club, they merged with Bristol Penguins in 2018 in order to provide a wider range of opportunity for all swimmers in the area.

Portway Swimming Club has been known for being a friendly swimming club, progressing it’s swimmers through good quality teaching and coaching.

Session times


Blue – Swim Academy
Tuesday 7.00pm to 7.30pm or 7.30pm to 8pm
Friday 7.00pm to 7.40pm
Ages 7 to 9
Swimmers who enter this group will already have a basic command of the strokes and work on advancing their stroke technique and beginning to develop basic skills in preparation for competitive swimming.


Yellow – Development Squad
Monday 5.00pm to 5.55pm
Friday 7 to 7.40pm or 7.40 to 8.25pm
Ages 8 to 11
Skills preparing for competitive swimming. More advanced stroke technique work and focus on dives, starts and different turns.


Green – Age Group Club
Tuesday 8.00pm to 9pm
Friday 8.25 to 9.15pm
Ages 11-13
Training and skills for club swimmers who either wish to take a less competitive route or for those swimmers who have not achieved county championship consideration times.


Purple – Age Group Development
Tuesday 8.00pm to 9.00pm
Friday 7.00pm to 8.15pm

Sunday at Hengrove 5 to 6pm
Advanced training and skills for swimmers who are actively involved in competitive events and are working towards or have achieved county consideration times.
Ages 10 to 13


Black – Youth Club
Tuesday 8.00pm to 9pm
Friday 8.15pm to 9.15pm
Ages 13+
Higher level training, skills, technique and fitness for club swimmers.
